Carice van Heusden

Carice van Heusden is a young filmmaker from the Netherlands who currently resides in Brussels. Her passion for film was ignited at an early age, inspired by the power of storytelling and the visual possibilities inherent in the medium. This profound appreciation for cinema ultimately led her to Brussels, where she has further developed her creativity and immersed herself in the world of film at the RITCS School of Arts.

‘In my personal work, I focus on the female perspective, using a strong research-based methodology. This results in intimate films that explore the complexity of the human psyche and human relationships. Beyond the discipline of film, I aspire to break open the defined boundaries between the different art disciplines and have a keen interest in theatre and visual arts.’

Besides focusing on developing her voice as an author, she held various roles within different discipline, including: assistant director, screenwriter and the art department. After completing several distinctive short films during her studies, she is now working on her Bachelor Film ‘Nova Alma’ at RITCS.

Nova Alma

Nova Alma is an experimental interpretation of the rebirth process based on near-death experiences, the Tibetan Book of the Dead, and the divergent views surrounding death in non-Western cultures.

"I have memories that belong to someone else," Nova’s childlike voice speaks at the beginning of the film. We see a body die on a cellular level, while Alma, a young woman, is forced to say goodbye to her loved ones. Passing the threshold of death, Alma enters a Kafkaesque in-between world — a vacuum where time and space are meaningless concepts. In this in-between state, guided by an absent presence, Alma begins her journey toward reincarnation.
